Hillsborough is ideally located at the junction
of interstates 40 and 85 in North Carolina's Central Piedmont
Region. The town — consisting of 3,423.28 acres (5.35 square
miles) — is on the western edge of the greater Triangle area. With
a population of 6,162 people, Hillsborough remains the flourishing
small town it has been since the 18th century. True to its
heritage, it is still an excellent stopover for long-distance
travelers or a destination for day trips from the greater Triangle
and Triad areas and from southern Virginia.

Focused Growth in Hillsborough
The Town
of Hillsborough plans to allow more dense development. But there’s
one catch: planning officials want the growth and development in
certain areas. This means that Hillsborough would limit the
extension of water and sewer to the designated growth areas. Sounds
like good planning. But as Frank Thomas, director of government
affairs for the Homebuilders Association of Durham, Orange and
Chatham Counties (HBADOC), points out in an email to his members,
“Elected officials will have to be willing to approve the higher
densities by this plan. Also, new urban boundaries will be
designated. As we have seen in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, this will
have a significant impact on land values and the availability of
affordable housing.” The HBADOC will be forming a working task force
of members to address the plan and participate in planning meetings
with Hillsborough officials. Hillsborough elected leaders will vote
on the plan next year.
